Increase in MPs’ salaries | A “consensus” but not necessarily unanimity among the caquists

(Sherbrooke) The increase of $30,000 per year in the remuneration of MNAs has more than consensus, but perhaps not unanimity, in the caucus of elected members of the Coalition avenir Québec (CAQ).

This was suggested by CAQ MP André Bachand alongside his leader François Legault on Friday.

The member for Sherbrooke was called upon to comment on the controversial bill which proposes a $30,000 increase in the base salary of elected officials, on the eve of the CAQ convention which begins Saturday in Sherbrooke.

In a scrum in the parking lot of a tulip farm, Mr. Bachand first tried to avoid questions, then indicated that the increase was consensus in the caucus, which therefore implied that the deputies did not not all agreed.

He then corrected by saying that he would use a stronger word than consensus, declining to answer however whether there was unanimity.

He also wouldn’t say whether the original request to raise MPs’ salaries came from the CAQ caucus.
