Some 300 people were evacuated from the largest squat in France, in Vitry-sur-Seine, on the morning of Wednesday April 17. The associations are asking for details on accommodation solutions.
The police knocked on their door in the early morning. In Vitry-sur-Seine, in Val-de-Marne, 250 police officers were mobilized on Wednesday April 17 to empty the largest squat in France. Slated for demolition, the former headquarters of a bus company has accommodated up to 450 people over the past three years. 100 days before the Olympic Games, occupants are no longer welcome. The owner reportedly asked to recover the building.
300 people in uncertainty
“I don’t know how it’s going to go.”, asks one of the evictees, worried about whether housing will be offered to them. According to the associations present on site, 80% of the occupants are in a legal situation. “There are people who have lived here for three years and who thanks to this have been able to find a job, integrate into society, their children go to school in Vitry”points out Jhila Prentis, volunteer with the United Migrants association, who warns that these people will “find yourself on the street”. The accommodation solutions proposed as replacements for the 300 expelled this Wednesday morning have not been communicated.
