In Vienne, meadows are installed on the roofs of buildings to meet the new standards for public buildings. With the ultimate goal of saving energy. #TheyHaveTheSolution

In Vienne, work is going well. They take place on the roof of a college in Vouneuil-sous-Biard where an area of 5000 m² is covered with vegetation. The equivalent of a football field. Same operation in Chauvigny where a green roof is installed for the first time on a public building.

A green choice to meet new public construction standards. Although green roofs are initially more expensive than more conventional roofs, they prove attractive thanks to the energy savings achieved. The benefits are both environmental, economic and social.

More aesthetic, green roofs, which have a longer lifespan than traditional coverings, retain and absorb rainwater, which is sometimes polluting. “We no longer need large networks to evacuate water to stations that are very expensive”, explains the director of infrastructure at the Town Hall of Chauvigny. Plants do not need much maintenance or human intervention.

They are also good thermal insulators, enough to reduce our heating bills in winter, because they limit heat loss. While in summer, these roofs lined with green intercept solar radiation. No need for air conditioning, they keep cool and help to break up heat islands in cities where housing areas are dense, especially during heat waves.
