In Uruguay, ten elderly people die in a fire at their home

A team of investigators from the fire brigade was dispatched to the scene to clarify the circumstances of this tragedy.

A fire that left no survivors. Ten elderly people died on Sunday, July 7, in a fire at a retirement home in the city of Treinta y Tres, in eastern Uruguay. Eight women and two men died in the fire. “Unfortunately, all the residents died,” said the Interior Ministry spokesman. “The 20-year-old employee managed to get out before the firefighters arrived (…) and is emotionally disturbed without any apparent injuries.”the ministry said in a statement. The fire broke out at 6 a.m. (11 a.m. Paris time).

The tragedy comes ten days after a fire broke out in a home for the elderly and people with mental health problems in the city of Melo (northeastern Uruguay). The fire, which broke out in the early hours of June 27, led to the evacuation of the 42 residents. A 77-year-old man died shortly after. Fourteen people were hospitalized, including a woman who died on Tuesday.
