Night has fallen in kyiv but the Ukrainian capital is no longer lit by street lights. Here, along the sidewalks, there are destroyed vehicles: neighborhoods have been damaged by debris from missiles intercepted above the capital. kyiv and Kharkiv were notably targeted by an insanely violent strike on Tuesday January 2, and hit by almost a hundred missiles, including supersonic missiles.

In the capital, the facades of buildings are blackened and there are no more windows. Chipboard panels have already replaced store windows. Families of residents come out of buildings in clusters, with a blanket or a mattress, forced to leave their homes now open to the four winds in the bitter cold of winter. They head towards the metro, a 10-minute walk away, a reassuring landmark for spending the night.

Despite this difficult context, there is no resignation in kyiv. Elzbieta, a gymnastics mat rolled up under the arm, is an example of this. “It’s going to drive you crazy if you realize what’s happening. We’ll have fun with it after we win, but for now we can only adapt to the situation and maybe, ask for more armaments from France for example”she explains.

“I read that NATO was created to counter Russia, but the irony is that perhaps only Ukraine is fighting against Russia.”

Before returning to his shelter in the metro, Elzbieta went for a drink on Tuesday January 2 evening with his friends. A few hours after the attack, stores, bars and restaurants had resumed normal activity. An insane resilience, like these inhabitants.
