In two weeks, during the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, the Food Bank collected nearly 60 tons of food, France Culture learned on Monday, August 12, from the food aid network.

To limit food waste as much as possible, Paris 2024 had planned to redistribute unconsumed products from the 13 million meals and snacks served at the Olympic sites. Three associations had signed an agreement: Restos du Cœur, Chaînon Manquant and the French Federation of Food Banks.

The president of the Paris and Île-de-France Food Bank (Bapif) François Gras welcomes the success of this “good operation”, which allowed to “harvest quality products”. He explains that the organisms were able to recover “lots of fruits and vegetables, breakfasts, dairy products and quite a few salads or pre-packaged snacks.” These fresh products have therefore come “complete” THE “dry or frozen products”, for which the Food Bank “benefits from European funds” for the purchase. François Gras describes it thus “a great addition for people in real precarious situations.”

François Gras specifies on franceinfo that these 60 tonnes are used “to all food banks in France” and represent “roughly the equivalent of over 100,000 meals”He explains that the redistribution is done with “of all the associations that remain in operation in August”The president of Bapif considers that the Food Bank “could have worked without” these redistributions, but the need remains very important: “We are unable to meet the needs of our associations and our beneficiaries at the expected level”he regrets.
