Monday, August 8, the news of 12/13 presents the maritime medical consultation center (CCMM), a maritime SAMU which treats medical emergencies on board all types of ships.
A nurse on board a ferry off the English coast communicates with an SAMU team from Purpan hospital in Toulouse (Haute-Garonne). Here, at the maritime medical consultation center (CCMM), a doctor makes a diagnosis. Dr. Patrick Roux, emergency doctor in charge of the CCMM, explains that the calls received can come from all over the world. On average, the medical center provides 6,000 consultations per year. The most serious cases sometimes require medical evacuation, but 80% of patients are treated on board, with on-board medication.
The largest ships have teleconsultation cases. They allow you to take your blood pressure or perform an electrocardiogram, for example. The maritime medical consultation center was created in 1983 within the SAMU. Medical aid at sea is free at any time, on all the seas of the world and on ships whose captain is French.
