Secateurs in hand, Adrian Moore, in a t-shirt and Bermuda shorts, walks the green hills of the Simpsons vineyard located in Kent, in the south-east of England. At the beginning of October, the harvest has not yet started in the area where the winegrower works. The good weather and summer temperatures delayed them.

Adrian Moore samples bunches, making sure “not to damage any fruit“. He will then test them to determine whether to harvest. “This is the ideal scenario, not only for the maturity of the grapes but also for harvesting, he said, looking at the big blue sky with a radiant smile. It saves us from working in the rain and the cold.” Temperatures in September were well above average and this global warming is confirmed from year to year.

“It’s worrying from a climatic point of view, it shouldn’t be so hot this season. But now, I’m happy that it is.”

Den’é van Wyk has been working at Simpsons for just under two years. She arrived from Stellebonsh, a wine stronghold in South Africa. When he left, those close to him were surprised by this choice of professional destination. “There is a great future for wine here, that’s for sure”sweeps away the young woman. “In the next ten years, there will be a boom, I am convinced. We will have all the necessary aromas and we will be able to make prestigious wines”she believes.

The brake of Brexit

This year, the Simpsons estate hopes to produce 250,000 bottles, and up to 350,000 eventually. Enthusiastic and determined, the owners are benefiting from global warming, but they have to deal with Brexit, which is hampering their business. It is now more complicated for them to export to Europe and find labor.
