Monday, February 14, French flowers are trying to find a place for Valentine’s Day. Indeed, 90% of the bouquets are produced abroad. But today the demand is increasing in favor of short circuits. Example in the Var, flagship department of the French flower.

Anemone, alstroemeria or poppy, at Laëtitia Padilla, florist, roses are prohibited. “Even on February 14, December 24, there is none“, she specifies. At home, everything is local and seasonal. Her flowers from the Var seem to please the customers. “We often pay more when we want beautiful roses that come from the end of the world, so for local flowers and artisans, it’s good“, says a customer.

This local method delights horticulturists. In Carqueiranne (Var), it’s harvest day. Every year, Thierry, a horticulturist, harvests 500,000 buttercups, and picking has been done in the family for four generations. Before Covid-19, their harvest was mainly sent abroad, such as to the Netherlands. Since then things have changed, French buyers are twice as numerous. “We discovered that in France, we were able to produce good quality flowers“, thinks Thierry. It takes from 32 euros for a French bouquet.
