A tropical storm heading toward Florida in the southeastern United States, “should strengthen rapidly” and turn into a hurricane, before making landfall on Monday morning, August 5, the American Hurricane Center (NHC) announced Sunday. As residents prepare for the arrival of the storm, named Debby, evacuation orders have been issued in several counties, according to local media. “Take the situation seriously”said Hernando County Fire Chief and Public Safety Officer, anticipating “that the water will rise as the storm passes.”
The NHC warned Sunday morning of“a potentially fatal danger” linked to heavy rains that could cause flash flooding. The entire west coast of Florida, along the Gulf of Mexico, is under tropical storm warning, said Mike Brennan of the NHC, urging residents to “find a safe place before nightfall”He added that we should expect, for several days, “very very heavy rainfall” which could reach record levels, with possible flash floods “in areas that are not normally flooded”.
Debby could also bring tornadoes late Sunday or early Monday, forecasters said. President Joe Biden declared a state of emergency in Florida on Sunday, releasing federal funds to help local authorities deal with the storm, which is in the middle of hurricane season. In July, Hurricane Beryl hit the southern United States unusually early and killed several people.
