“This assembly should be ashamed” : this is what Zooey Zephyr said last week to the elected Republicans of Montana. The 34-year-old elected transgender reacts to the passage of a law which makes hormonal treatments inaccessible to minors. “Next time you bow your head to pray, I hope you see the blood on your hands”she says.

Inadmissible remarks for the conservative majority of this northern state, which voted to exclude it from parliament and called on the young woman to apologize. “When the president of the chamber asks me to apologize, what he really asks me is to shut up!”she is indignant.

“When I stood up to say that you had blood on your hands, it was not hyperbole. My community is subjected to these laws which lead to our death, and they ask me to be complicit!”

This case is part of the broader context of a vast offensive by American conservatives against transgender people: across the country, around thirty pieces of legislation have been passed in 14 states since January to restrict the rights of transgender people.

Unless she makes amends, Zooey Zephyr will remain excluded, but can continue to vote remotely.
