At least 805 incidents of an anti-Semitic nature have been recorded in the United Kingdom since the Hamas terrorist attack. Figures that echo the “more than 850 incidents” recorded by Élisabeth Borne on French territory since October 7. The French Prime Minister also described“despicable actions” anti-Semitic tags discovered in several towns in Ile-de-France.
The UK has not seen such figures for almost 40 years, when this count began. The number of anti-Semitic acts is eight times higher than in 2022 at the same time. These are essentially tags, insults or threats via social networks, which are listed among 649 aggressive behaviors. But there were also 35 attacks.
Police considered lax
Large demonstrations in support of the Palestinian people took place across the country this past weekend. Processions in which slogans, gestures, and disguises could be associated with hatred of Jews. The climate is particularly tense and the police are considered too lax by part of the population. But the boss of the London police responds that the law does not allow him to do more. “We have these big protestsexplains Mark Rawley on Sky News. Some find things happening there upsetting, others find it disgusting. And sometimes, instinctively, people argue that it must be illegal. But there is no reason to arrest people who are not liable to prosecution, it only makes the situation worse.”
British Home Secretary Suella Braverman describes last weekend’s protests as “marches of hatred”. She says she is ready to modify the law if necessary, to help the police intervene and arrest demonstrators at the slightest excess. At the same time, anti-Muslim acts have also increased. Since October 7 there have been more than 291, six times more than usual.
