As Russian and American soldiers hold their positions on either side of Ukraine’s border with Russia, residents of the city of Mariupol worry about a possible Russian attack.
The inhabitants of Mariupol (Ukraine) fear a Russian attack, because it is a scenario that they have already experienced. A resident vividly remembers the rockets launched by pro-Russian separatists in 2015. What if history repeats itself? Mariupol is the economic heart of southern Ukraine. But its port, its factories and its freight trains operate in slow motion because the region is literally surrounded, even asphyxiated by Moscow.
To the north of Mariupol is the area of pro-Russian separatists, to the east Russia and to the south Crimea, annexed by Vladimir Putin. The port manager denounces what he calls the “harassment from moscow“. Vladimir Putin has somehow closed the sea with a 19 km bridge that connects Russia to Crimea. The city of Mariupol is now dependent on the goodwill of Russians to export to the Sea of Azoz and export to the world .
