All the polls predicted an ultra-tight second round and yet: Javier Milei, the ultra-liberal far-right candidate, climate skeptic and who wants to reduce state activities to the strict minimum, was comfortably elected president of Argentina on Sunday November 19. He convinced 55% of voters by promising, among other things, to “tronçonner” the State and abandon the Argentine peso, in favor of the dollar, to curb galloping inflation.

“A dollar a sandwich”, says this traveling salesman who quickly adapted, with humor, to the new Argentina promised by Javier Milei. In the streets, just in front of the economist’s bunker, the activists let out their joy with cries of “Freedom ! Freedom !“, shared between euphoria and relief. “A paradigm shift was fundamental because we were living in a lot of negativity, and society needs positivity. We were really tired of falling deeper and deeper into a hole. We needed light and Milei is our chance to see the light”rejoices this Argentina.

“People are enthusiastic”

In the gathered crowd, Argentinian flags but also yellow flags with a lion’s head in reference to Milei’s mane. Activists of all ages are there to celebrate change. “We were tired”confides Osvaldo, 76 years old.

“How is it possible in our country which is so rich that people are dying of hunger and there is nothing to eat, that there are so many poor people in the streets?”

“We are very happy, we see the happiness of the people. Look at all these young people with the Argentinian flag! The people are enthusiastic. They have changed the expression on their faces”, welcomes Osvaldo. The economic crisis and the suffering of the Argentines got the better of Peronism and the voters clearly chose a profound transformation. A transition is nevertheless planned until the day of Milei’s inauguration, which will take place on December 10.
