In Africa, thousands have already found refuge in the north of Ivory Coast. These are Burkinabés who fled their country to escape the abuses of terrorist groups.
Barbed wire, no tents but terracotta brick houses. In the north of Côte d’Ivoire, there is a refugee camp where thousands of Burkinabés live. They fled their country, which had become too violent and dangerous. After the exodus, they finally find refuge. “One day, men arrived in our village on a motorbike, we immediately understood that they were jihadists. They fired, our husbands were all killed. They told us they would come back, we didn’t want to not live the same fate”explained one of the refugees.
For ten years, armed groups linked to Al-Qaeda or the Islamic State have sowed terror in Burkina Faso, a West African country ruled by a military junta. She took power by force in January 2022 and forced the French military to interrupt their mission and leave the country a year later. Since then, the situation has worsened in certain regions abandoned by the authorities. The camp located in the north of Côte d’Ivoire now hosts more than 66,000 refugees.
