in the middle of the Palmade affair, JoeyStarr balances without taboo on his own addictions to hard drugs and his attempts to escape them

For a time, JoeyStarr was known more for his slip-ups than for his multi-card artistry. The ex-sidekick of Kool Shen with whom he founded the group NTM in the 1980s, fought against demons for a long time. Loud-mouthed, often virulent in his media remarks, the rapper went through a dark period at the turn of the 2000s. Sentenced in February 1999 for assaulting a flight attendant, he was sentenced to three months in prison for intentional assault and battery on a former companion in June of the same year. Recidivist in 2009, he will be imprisoned again for 6 months firm for “intentional violence with the threat of a weapon and destruction of private property”. A behavior which, if he regrets it today, is surely no stranger to the drugs he was using at the time. Father of three boys (Mattisse, Khalil and Marcello), JoeyStarr now seems to have turned the page… The one who is also an actor has just published My Bistronomik Guide who brings together his passion for cooking and beautiful addresses to share.

“For crack, when you have to cook the thing, I don’t care about it”

Invited by the singer Rose who hosts the podcast Counter-addiction this Friday March 3, 2023, the 55-year-old artist returned to his past addictions. “In the kitchen, I am unable to take a book and do the recipe from start to finish. With drugs I was also like that”, he confides soberly to his interviewer. Aware that he had a real need for care and especially pushed by his relatives, JoeyStarr ended up entering rehab: “I did two cures. I conceived my first child in treatment. It worked, but not the way it should have. I was freaking out to death. I was exchanging urine, bullshit… They ended up firing me. For a week, I’ve been scheming to be able to go out (…) But it was mainly to reassure my relatives that I was doing this, it was not at all for me”he explains before affirming: “I’ve never gotten so high as in rehab.” But this sad fact, admitted without detour today, will not resist the tragedy. The rapper was indeed close to death, turning his life upside down overnight, following a drug overdose: “I never had this thing of going to overdose, but on the other hand, it was the side effects that almost killed me. I take something to sleep,I overdosed. They called the fire department. I’m a really bad addict, for crack, when it comes to cooking stuff, I don’t care, I just want to do my thing.” explains the one who almost died, emphasizing that he was with his brother that evening. Assagi, the fifties finally admits: “Today, I eased off on a lot of things (…) I feel much more at peace. And it’s not just due to age, it’s also due to different encounters I’ve had.”emphasizing the day-to-day importance of being in good company. Even if it is clear that alcohol remains a major sin in his life…
