In Kharkiv, in the east of the country, the inhabitants were awakened early in the morning of February 26 by the agonizing warning siren. Bombardments, sometimes intense, took place. In the hospitals, the human damage of the war is visible.
At the general hospital in Kharkiv (Ukraine), the sirens sounded on Saturday, February 26. A few patients and doctors are already going down to the basement. “There have been shelling all the time for three days”, she laments. In the penumbra and humidity, they settle as they can. A majority of the staff remained on the floors to deal with the most serious cases. At the end of the alert, they go upstairs. Some patients are in intensive care after being injured during the bombardments.
There would be 13 civilian deaths. “We live here now, us nurses and doctors. We cannot return with these bombardments and we live too far”, says a member of the medical staff. The explosions ring out in Kharkiv and are more and more numerous. Outside, a couple say goodbye to their daughter but they have to stay, their parents being too old to flee.
