In the southern suburbs of Beirut, this is the neighborhood that is targeted daily by Israeli bombings, a stronghold of Hezbollah and its sympathizers. The Shiite militia met the international press in this district for an unprecedented communications operation. On site, buildings recently bombed. According to the Israeli army, the apartments in these buildings are Hezbollah hideouts. Accusations that are denied by neighborhood residents: “I have been working for the electricity company here for 15 years and I have never seen the Hezbollah men in this building”says a resident.
It is in this suburb that the leader of Hezbollah was killed by the Israelis on Friday September 27. In front of the bombed premises of a religious television, a Lebanese journalist speaks on behalf of Hezbollah, he is a correspondent for an Iranian media outlet. The shadow of Tehran is never far away: “Everyone knows that you cannot hide missiles and missile launchers in a place so populated by civilians”. This media operation comes the day after the Iranian attack on Tel Aviv.
