A major ministerial trip is planned for Mayotte on Sunday 21 August. Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin, in particular, will have to respond to the suffering of the population, between violence and economy weakened.

They will be eagerly awaited. On Sunday August 21, Gérald Darmanin, Minister of the Interior, will travel to Mayotte accompanied by his Minister Delegate for Overseas Territories, Jean-François Carenco, and the Secretary of State for Children, Charlotte Caubel. The department faces many difficulties, including insecurity, which directly concerns the Minister of the Interior. Friday, scuffles between young people and the police took place. An operation to combat illegal immigration is at the origin of the tensions.

Djamalidine Djabiri, representative of the SGP-Police union, believes that “‘there is on the part of those who cause this violence a desire to deny French Mayotte. When we systematically use violence to achieve a political goal, we are in terrorism. Mr. Darmanin’s response […] must be up to it“. The social difficulties are also immense, with 77% of the Mayotte population living below the poverty line. The median standard of living is 7 times lower than the national average.
