Among the products whose prices are rising, there is now whelks, in particular due to global warming. They are becoming increasingly rare. The price per kilo has doubled in one year, which worries fishermen.
On the port of Dieppe (Seine-Maritime), on the morning of Friday April 14, there is not a single whelk. With the storm, the majority of fishermen preferred to stay at the dock. Lately, the price of whelk has skyrocketed too much for regular customers. “Before, we had them at 4 euros and now they are at 6 euros per kilo”, notes a customer. For Cathy Delmache, fishmonger, if there are fewer whelks, it is because of global warming.
Overfishing blamed
This has real consequences for fishermen. “With the hot weather, they fished less. When there are not enough quantities, for them, the cost of diesel, the guys to pay and everything, it’s too expensive so it’s not possible”, explains Cathy Delmache. Jérôme Féron, fisherman, is still out this morning, but the fishing is not great. You have to go further to fish, which is also a cause of overfishing.
