The Donbass is getting ready, as satellite images confirm the positioning of hundreds of Russian troop transport vehicles in eastern and southern Ukraine. The Red Cross tries to accompany the inhabitants, who have been living for weeks, buried under the bombardments.
At the checkpoint in Ukraine, even the Red Cross convoy is checked. The bulletproof vest is recommended, the rescuers enter a dangerous zone, under intensive Russian bombardment. The city of Sievierodonetsk, east of the Donbass, is still under Ukrainian control. In the shelter of a factory, 300 civilians are refugees. “We have to act quickly, because we are in a combat zone, there were bombardments (Friday April 15), not far from here at 700 m half an hour ago”says Simon Schornothe International Red Cross.
Rescuers are unloading medicines and food, vital supplies for civilians who had only a week’s worth of food left in front of them. When the dull roar of cannons is heard, men, women and children return to the shelter. The Ukrainian authorities fear urban fighting, deadly, at the time of the Russian offensive, especially in these cities. A race against the clock is launched to try to evacuate the most possible civilians.
