In Aube, white swans wreak havoc in agricultural fields and devour barley and wheat crops. A nightmare for farmers who no longer know how to get rid of this protected species.

A swan come from the sky more really in the smell of sanctity. In Dienville (Aube), you just have to look down to see the damage caused by the feathered beast in the surrounding fields. Wheat, barley, nothing resisted his voracious appetite. The birds that ravage cereal crops a few months before the harvest, the phenomenon is not new, but has been increasing year by year since 2020 and the confinements.

At least 3,000 euros in deadweight losses

“A plot like this, 11 hectares, there are almost 4.5 hectares where there will be no harvest. We can count 1,000 euros of expenses and 2,000 euros of net income”, explains Pierre Peillard, grain farmer in Dienville. If the mute swan is classified as a protected species, the farmers are not and the damage is not compensated. They ask that the public authorities find solutions when the mayor does not expect to see the situation improve.
