In recent months, France has lacked rain. Groundwater levels are at their lowest, forcing some municipalities to limit their water consumption. Report in the Alpes-Maritimes.

The village of La Penne (Alpes-Maritimes) is home to a small hamlet with only five houses, as well as the sheepfold of Dominique Girod, which houses 350 sheep. The drought of recent months has had consequences for her and her animals. “Before, it was only summer, so we were still used to restricting ourselves in water. (…) But there, it becomes problematic”, explains the breeder. The hamlet does not have running water: the inhabitants collect water from precipitation, but it has only rained three times since November.

To cope with this lack of rain, Dominique Girod fetches, once a week, 6,000 liters of water 10 km from the hamlet. Marjorie Rosa, mayor of the village of La Penne, to which the hamlet is attached, draws up a worrying report: 70% less rainwater compared to last year. All eyes are on the sky: Météo France announces two days of rain next week.
