The Swedish Prime Minister makes no secret of the fact that the United States represents a guarantee of security for him, in particular to support Ukraine, which has been invaded by Russia for almost two years. “I would like to underline the very firm commitment of the United States and say how important this commitment is for the future“, says Ulf Kristersson, at the Stockholm Military Academy, during a press conference on Tuesday January 30.

In the room, opinion is widely shared by the public, officers and students of the military academy, as Sweden prepares to join NATO. Emmanuel Macron, visiting Stochkolm, nevertheless warned the Swedish head of state against any military dependence on the American ally. “We must be ready to act, defend and support Ukraine whatever happens and whatever future decisions the United States makes“, asserts the French president.

We must be able to decide for ourselves and not leave this decision-making power to the great powers, even when it comes to our allies, because they are on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean.

The French head of state thus reaffirms that security in Europe is a matter for Europeans. The speech is daring among Swedish soldiers, who are impatient to join NATO. The academy students approve regardless. “I think European countries must be able to defend themselvesestimates a student. Especially since the United States is concerned about other regions of the world: China, Taiwan… So we must take our responsibilities for the future.

France and Sweden intend to increase their military cooperation, particularly in anti-aircraft defense. The two countries are to sign a declaration of intent on air defense and air surveillance systems. Swedish carmaker Saab and French arms company MBDA are also expected to sign a contract to develop an anti-tank missile in the coming days.
