In Sudan, a respite in the fighting on the first evening of Eid

After heavy fighting in Khartoum on Friday April 21, the sound of explosions ceased in the evening in certain districts of the Sudanese capital, while calls for a ceasefire multiplied. On the first evening of Eid al-Fitr marking the end of Ramadan, witnesses in different districts of the capital told AFP that they no longer heard explosions.

Like every day, the FSR and the army again announced a ceasefire on Friday. But soon after, both sides accused each other of breaking the truce (the RSF in the morning and the army in the evening). US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said “welcome these announcements”. While adding: “it is nevertheless clear that the confrontation continues and that there is no confidence between the two forces”.

For six days, violent clashes have pitted the Sudanese army against the paramilitaries of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Triggered on April 15, the fighting left 413 dead and 3,551 injured, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
