Yolanda Diaz, number three in the Spanish government and leader of the far-left Sumar party, announced Monday June 10 that she was abandoning the leadership of her party. At issue: the poor results of his party in the European elections. The right came first on Sunday, with 22 seats, and the Spanish far left fell, going from six to five seats between the 2019 and 2024 elections.

“I have decided to give up my position as coordinator of Sumar”declared Yolanda Diaz, who however remains in her post within the executive as Minister of Labor. “The citizens have spoken and I draw the consequences,” she continued. “It is necessary for a debate to open” within the formation, which since 2023 has brought together almost all of the parties to the left of the left. “With this decision I launch it”, said the Minister of Labor again.

On Sunday, it was the conservatives of the Popular Party who won, with a total of 22 seats. For its part, the Spanish far left recorded a decline, going from six seats in 2019 to five. This election also sees the Ciudadanos and Podemos parties decline. The first lost all of its eight seats, while the second went from six to two MEPs. The Socialist Party of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez came 2nd and obtained 20 seats. Finally, aith 9.6% of the votes, the far-right group Vox significantly increases its score compared to 2019 (6.3%) and goes from three to six seats.
