In the city of Shanghai (China), the real estate giant’s cafes have become essential for single Chinese seniors looking for love in recent years.
It’s a store furniture, but also a way to find love. In Shanghai (China)every Tuesday, hundreds of elderly people, like Qingqing, meet up to share a drink, a snack or simply a chat at Ikea. “When I reached 60 years old, I realized that I too wanted love. That’s not embarassing to express it, young people are not the only ones who need love”she explains.
Meetings without an organizer
The man she is chatting with, Gu Yijun, traveled an hour and a half to find someone. “When I retired, I wanted to have someone in my life”, he explains. These meetings at Ikea have been happening for a little over ten years, but no one knows exactly how it all started. There is no organizer, the participants do not know this place word of mouth. China has 297 million people over 60, a quarter of whom are single.
