Every year, all over the world, volunteers come together to collect waste. On the occasion of World Cleanup Day, Saturday, September 21, a France Télévisions team was alongside the participants on the beach in Bouches-du-Rhône.

Every time we pick up trash, we find the same things: cigarette butts, plastic or cans. On this beach in Sausset-les-Pins (Bouches-du-Rhône), volunteers are busy, equipped with gloves and long tongs. We found quite a few plastic bottles, packets of crisps, even fishing weights.“, explains one of them, Thomas Chesseboeuf.

Several dozen people came to participate in the operation. Some are very young.I’ve liked collecting since I was 6 years old. If we don’t do it, it’ll go into the water and the fish will eat it, they’ll die.”assures Jules Chamayou, 8 years old. With a metal detector, a volunteer tracks down the most buried waste, such as batteries or aluminum packaging, “in a ball, well buried”In just two hours, 41 kilos of waste were collected.

This means that we are not moving forward in our way of consuming.”deplores the organizer, a member of the association “Planète Perles” for more than ten years. On the occasion of World Cleanup Day, more than 2,500 collection operations are organized during the weekend, all over France.
