Since the start of the war, millions of Ukrainians have fled, particularly to France, with one hope: one day to return to Ukraine. In the meantime, these families are trying to continue living with the support of volunteers.
In Saint-Omer (Pas-de-Calais), it’s moving day. Ukrainians and French came to lend a hand. A refugee family will finally be able to leave unsanitary housing thanks to the mobilization of residents. They go every week alongside refugees to help them. En 2022, after a long journey to escape the war, hundreds of Ukrainians arrive in Saint-Omer, exhausted. Among them, Bogdan, Olena and their children.
A third of refugees returned
Since then, two years have passed and despite a generosity that has never ceased, it is difficult for Olena and her sick husband to plan for France. Their eyes are constantly glued to their phone waiting for news about their 23-year-old son.”Day and night, we worry, he has just signed to go to the front, and he already has so many friends who have died there. What keeps me going is that my other children are here“, explains Olena, overwhelmed. In this life between two countries, it is school that punctuates Olena’s days. Her daughter is in CE1, she is making rapid progress in French, thanks to the help of her classmates In Saint-Omer, nearly a third of the refugees chose to return to Ukraine despite the risks. For those who stayed, strong bonds were created.
