The teacher of the Faculty of Law of Rouen had been the victim of a violent racist attack in 2019 in Canteleu (Seine-Maritime). His alleged murderer, who has since been interned for mental illness, is due to be tried in September 2022.
This is not the first rally in tribute to Mamoudou Barry, this Franco-Guinean academic who died following a racist attack in 2019. A week after the events, a peaceful march was organized in Rouen between the Faculty of Law and the courthouse to honor the memory of the deceased, say “stop racism” and demand “justice for Doctor Mamoudou Barry”.
Three years after the racist attack of which the teacher of the Faculty of Law of Rouen was the victim, and as in previous years, a tribute was paid to him on Saturday July 9, 2022. After a very moving rally in the morning in Canteleu, on the scene of the aggression, a march was organized in the streets of Rouen.
Before the departure of the procession, several people took the floor to denounce racism. Among them, Nicolas Mayer-RossignolMayor (PS) of Rouen and President of the Rouen Normandy Metropolis, who spoke with one knee on the ground and one fist raised, as he had done in 2020:
“We see, two years later, that racism is still there, that these issues have not left our society. I am honest, I would even say that they have rather increased in reality, when we look at what is happening for example in the United States but also in Europe.

After calling for the fight against racism, the mayor of Rouen spoke of the importance of fraternity:
“Let us continue to carry this symbolic word which is a word of fraternity. After all, fraternity is on the front of all our town halls. Martin Luther King, that is to say, maybe it’s better that we live like brothers, otherwise we’re all going to die like idiots. It’s as simple as that!
Mamoudou Barry had been called a “dirty black” and had been beaten to death on July 19, 2019 in Canteleu. Since the facts, his alleged attacker has been interned in psychiatry for schizophrenia. In June 2022 we learned that the Rouen investigating judge decided that the suspect should answer for his actions for “deadly blows”.
The magistrate, who relied on psychiatric expertise, noted that the discernment of the alleged perpetrator was altered but not abolished at the time of the events. A nuance that paves the way for a trial.
What the family and relatives of the victim and their supporters have been asking for since 2019.
The alleged aggressor will therefore be tried in September 2022 before the criminal court of Seine-Maritime, a jurisdiction composed of 5 professional magistrates.
