In Reims, a ceramist makes first name bowls in Braille

Fervent lover of manual work, Stéphanie has been making pottery for years and a few months ago, she decided to make this passion a little more than a Sunday activity, by becoming a professional. Since then, on her potter’s wheel, the young woman has given free rein to her imagination: bowls, mugs, vases… An imagination that has driven her to create personalized bowls for the blind. “I had the idea thanks to the daughter of a couple of friends, who is blind. She had given me a braille alphabet that I had for a long time under my eyes on my fridge, so I I thought I was going to make her a bowl of hers.”

His first bowl was a gift but the idea hit the mark. Since the publication of a photo of its creation on his Instagram accountorders are multiplying in the four corners of France. “There is even a gentleman who came to my house to get one”laughs the ceramist.

Careful work

To write first names, Stéphanie had to adapt to this alphabet, which must be very precise. “It’s meticulous work because you can’t afford to put the letters just anywhere. It’s very important that they are aligned and that the space between them is the same every time.” These bowls are made to order, even the color is customizable.

From now on, the resident of Reims knows the Braille alphabet almost by heart and even has fun writing little words in Braille when she sends her parcels. In order to further develop his project, Stéphanie offers pottery lessons to blind people. “You don’t need to see to make pottery. It’s just a matter of touching. Besides, we tested pottery blindly with two of my students and one of them is revealed during this session.
