The Isère firefighters were called to two big fires in the Chartreuse massif on the night of Saturday 4 to Sunday 5 June. Two sawmills which are a few minutes’ drive from each other were destroyed by the flames.
A damaged high voltage line
They are triggered a first time at 2:30 a.m. in the morning to go to Saint-Christophe-sur-Guiers. A 600m² sawmill is on fire and a 39-year-old man injured his arm while trying to protect his house, next to the burning building. The flames also damaged high voltage line which supplies more than 110 homes according to firefighters. 90 are waiting this Sunday afternoon to find the current.
Less than three hours later, around 5 a.m., a new call takes firefighters to a second sawmill in Entre-Deux-Guiers. The flames ravage a wood storage building over 2000m², eight lances are deployed to try to extinguish the fire.
Eight outbreaks of fire in the sector
Surveillance rounds by firefighters are organized in the afternoon on both sites. The proximity of the two buildings raises questions about the origin of the fire and the findings on site leave little room for doubt. According to our information, eight outbreaks of fire were noted in the sector, the criminal track is considered.
In Saint-Christophe-sur-Guiers, Gérard Mollier looks at the remains of his sawmill, disappointed. “It’s a whole life that goes up in smoke, a family story: it was created 100 years ago by my grandfather. I’ve been holding it alone for 20 years since my brother fell ill. If I had been able to continue, even until I was 80 years old I would have done it.”
