Montreal’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade, the oldest in Canada, welcomed thousands of spectators downtown Sunday noon. Between giant clovers, Irish flags and bagpipes, the atmosphere was festive on Sainte-Catherine Street.

Under the sound of bagpipes, dozens of floats paraded to celebrate the Irish holiday. “The Irish have contributed greatly to building Montreal. We are here to celebrate with them. It’s a way of thanking them,” says Martine Laparé, who attended the parade proudly wearing her green hat.

Dozens of dancers followed the traditional dance steps on Sainte-Catherine Street between Fort and Metcalfe streets. It was 198e annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade in downtown Montreal.

Daniel Simard came to the parade with his wife and two young children. “We often came to the parade before the pandemic without children. It’s the first time that we can come the whole family, so we take advantage of it, ”he says with a clover drawn on the cheek.

Next Saturday will be the 11e St. Patrick’s Day parade in the Capitale-Nationale, after a three-year break due to the pandemic.
