IN PICTURES – The joy of Ukrainian refugees in Mayenne, during an excursion to Cancale

Oysters, marine iodine and good weather : everything was there to spend a superb day at sea. Forty Ukrainian women and children discovered Cancale, in Ille-et-Vilaine. They are refugees for several weeks in the La Chapelle au Rriboul sector, in northern Mayenne, and the Mayenne municipality wanted to give them a “change of air”. Yriana, 22, fled eastern Ukraine with her mother. In the streets of the port, she multiplies the photos with her smartphone. She explains, in English, that she is delighted to discover this small town: “I came to France and I just went to Laval, in Mayenne. I was very excited to come here and see the oysters, how to eat them. I come from Kharkiv and the last five years I lived in Kyiv, the Ukrainian capital. _She reminds me of the city of Odessa_a city near the sea. It looks a lot like it.”

After the tasting, the time has come to enjoy the sun and the beach. The group decides to land on the beach of Port Mer. A joy for the children, but also for Léna, Gleb’s mother. She smiles as she watches the children run on the sand, far from the war that is hitting her country: “It’s a shock that’s not gone yet and it’s not easy so this day allows you to forget everything, to live and breathe the sea air and enjoy the sun.”
