IN PICTURES – In Creuse, work ends for the church of Naillat

It is a very special religious building in Creuse, the only one in the department to have a twisted bell tower, with a spiral spire which gives the impression of permanent rotation. This is the church of Naillat. After three years of work and renovation, it is about to reopen to the public at the end of July.

Three years of work

The reopening of the Naillat church is an event in this town of more than 600 inhabitants. “We are attached to it, it is in a way our symbol“, summarizes the mayor, Laurent Tardy. And the building, built in the 13th century, needed some adjustments. “It is true that it was becoming dilapidated in places. Everything has been redone. We have photos where we saw very worn beams, you could put your arm or leg inside“.

From now on, the entire frame of the bell tower has been redone. The same goes for the frescoes present in the nave and in the choir of the church, partly erased and reproduced by craftsmen using period techniques. The two large bells of the church, formerly installed on large beams, are now installed on a brand new belfry.

Reopening scheduled for the end of July

Work on the Naillat church had been suspended in the middle of summer 2021, the time to organize a concert inside. This time, the building will be able to reopen for good and welcome the public in large numbers. A concert is indeed scheduled for the end of August. The church of Naillat will also house an exhibition, “the heritage of our countrysidefor three weeks, from August 9 to 23.
