“David Soul – beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother – passed away yesterday after a valiant battle for life in the loving company of his family. He shared many extraordinary gifts around the world as an actor, singer, storyteller, creative artist and dear friend. His smile, his laugh and his passion for life will be remembered by many whose lives he touched.”. This is the sad news announced by his wife, Helen Snell in a press release relayed by SkyNews.
A cult character
In the 70s he was the hero with Paul Michael Glaser of the American television series
“Starsky and Hutch”, at the wheel of their iconic red Ford Gran Torino striped with white. He was Hutch (Kenneth Hutchinson), reserved and thoughtful, while his sidekick David Starsky was more of the naive and very extroverted type. A tandem so cult that the theme song of the series (composed by Lalo Schifrin, who also created the theme of “Impossible mission”) is to this day a reference, even for the youngest.
It must be said that the series, first broadcast on TF1, between 1986 and 1989 and from 1989 to 1995, then migrated to M6 from 1987 to 1989 before TMC in 2005-2007, Polar + in 2008 and Direct 8 in 2009, without forgetting Série Club, RTL9, Ciné Cinéma Star from April 2011 and Paramount Channel since January 2022. Enough to reach a very wide audience, spanning several generations.
The film adaptation of this great TV hit was made in 2004, with Ben Stiller in the role of Starsky, Owen Wilson in that of Hutch, and Snoop Dogg to play Huggy the good tips – cult. The Soul-Glaser tandem also makes an appearance.
He played in “The judge is a woman”
But David Soul was not only the actor of “Starsky and Hutch”. We also saw him in the cinema in the iconic “Johnny is going to war“, And “Magnum Force” (Or “Inspector Harry 2”). On television, we also saw him in “Flip the Dolphin”, “Star Trek”, “Arabseque”, “Perry Mason” and even “The judge is a woman” !
