In photos | Montreal welcomes the country’s handball elite

Montreal is hosting the Canadian Handball Championships this weekend, at the Jean-Rougeau sports center, in the Villeray district, as well as at the Howie-Morenz arena, in Parc-Extension.

These are the first Canadian Handball Championships since 2019. The matches do not oppose provinces, but clubs. Here, the Montreal Celtic, in green, faces the Edmonton Northstar Avengers, in gray.

Quebec is the Canadian province where handball is the most popular. There are around 2700 federated members. This is much less than in 1980, when there were nearly 80,000 players in the province.

Canada has only participated in the Olympic handball tournament once. It was at the Montreal Games in 1976. His teams did not qualify for the Paris Games the next summer.
