Every winter, the canal that crosses the city of Ottawa, Canada, is transformed into a natural ice rink. But this year, the temperatures are too high and the ice is not thick enough to secure the skaters. The UNESCO listed site is therefore closed.

There is not enough ice on the canal that crosses Ottawa (Canada). Every winter, locals and tourists come to slide there day and night. The largest skating rink in the world, nearly 8 km long, allows you to visit Ottawa and stop to eat beaver tail in the booths along the canal. To do this, you need at least 30 cm of ice. To make it, the city therefore pumps water into the canal, and freezes it on the surface. But this year, the ice is not thick enough to open the attraction.

Temperatures that are too mild

For skaters to be able to slide on the canal, the temperature must also drop between -10 and -20°C. But the thermostat shows 8°C. “It’s a shame (…), but I think it’s a good way to make everyone aware of the impact of global warming”, says a passerby. Canada is experiencing its third mildest winter, but authorities are hoping the cold weather will eventually arrive.
