In Normandy, faced with rising waters and erosion, the municipal campsite of Quiberville-sur-Mer had to be moved 700 metres. This is a first in France.

In Quiberville-sur-Mer (Seine-Maritime), the campsite located a few meters from the sea was destroyed. If the sea overflowed tomorrow, you had a very dangerous place“, confides Jean-François Bloc, the mayor (centre right) of the city. The campsite is regularly flooded, stuck between a coastal river which is often in flood, and the advancing sea.

The mayor therefore took the problem head on and had a new campsite built 700 metres higher up, which opened in the summer. Not all the regulars followed suit.60% did not follow, but suddenly we have a new clientele, and we will gradually build loyalty among people.“, hopes Camille Goulm, the director of the establishment. Martine and Jean-Pierre, regulars at the old site, have followed the movement, even if the sea is now a little far away.

A vast land development project is underway. A small river, the Saâne, will return to its former course, on the former campsite, and an old bridge, which blocked the flow of water, will be replaced by another, allowing nature to reclaim its rights.
