This week the overseas newspaper focuses on the rumors circulating in New Caledonia following the violence, the Haitian migrants intercepted off the coast of Guadeloupe and the Reunion Islanders who are mobilizing to secure a road.
In New Caledonia, many food stores have been the target of the violence shaking the territory. Many were destroyed or looted. As a result, residents are desperate to get supplies and are being fooled by false information on social networks.
Haitian migrants intercepted
Off the coast of Guadeloupe, 29 Haitian migrants were intercepted on Tuesday May 14, 2024. Their expulsion was scheduled for the next day and they benefited at the last minute from an interim release, 10 minutes before their plane took off. This request for examination of their situation by the administrative court was made by a group of lawyers. Maître Prisk Navin denounces the way in which these migrants were treated upon their arrival.
The 29 migrants won their case, the administrative court authorized them to assert their right to asylum.
Road safety in Reunion
It is the one and only access road to the town of Salazie, in the north-east of Reunion. Problem is, it is regularly cut by landslides. The latest one took place about ten days ago. Monday May 13, 2024, a collective of angry residents distributed leaflets to motorists in order to move things forward.
