In Bavaria, training exists to become beer sommeliers. As with wine, they recommend beers to pair with dishes.
In Munich (Germany), the beer capital of the world, sommeliers are present in breweries. As with wine, they recommend the beer that goes best with the dish. Tobias Ranzinger trained to become a beer sommelier. Thus, students pay 3,450 euros for two weeks of lessons. The students are mainly young people, some in professional retraining, others working in breweries.
A blind tasting
“The image of beer has been rejuvenated. And when you start drinking strong beers, you become interested in all styles of beers.”, says Fabian Staudinger, sommelier trainer. To be a good sommelier, you have to know how to recognize beers from all over the world. After several days of training, the students take a blind tasting test. Each year, this school trains 100 beer sommeliers, a profession destined to develop in many breweries in Germany and abroad.
