Nicknamed “the island of captains”, Arz was the birthplace of many sailors, including Jean Bulot, an essential figure aged 85.
The island of Arz (Morbihan) has faced numerous storms, and so have its monuments. As if placed on a wire, a mill, stopped since 1910, is on the front line facing the elements. Jean Bulot is a bit like the guardian angel of this mill. More than just a building, it is a pearl for the island of Arz, because it attracts visitors. An emblem left abandoned for years, which almost disappeared 30 years ago. In 1994, the building and its dike were in ruins, with only a few stones remaining.
Jean Bulot, then just recently retired on his native island, put on his construction manager’s hat. Now renovated, this mill operates on the same principle as in the 16th century. The force of the sea drives a wheel. A rebirth which is the fruit of a somewhat crazy obstinacy. The owner of the mill witnessed this titanic project.
This mill has rescued many ships in danger. Jean Bulot ordered The Bee Flanders for 21 years. A legendary tugboat, a sort of Saint Bernard of the seas.
