Public art thought out by and for citizens, public art established on the territory according to a vision and an approach focusing on accessibility (in all directions) and equity, would you like it?
As part of the consultation on the future 2050 Urbanism and Mobility Plan of the City of Montreal, public art should have a planned and strategically considered place in the same way as urban design, cultural districts, bicycle paths , libraries, cultural centres, the development of our large parks, etc.
Public art should be considered in an integrated and transversal way in all urban planning, despite its complexity of management integrating the multiple ways of creating public art on the territory: mural program, citizen initiatives , City of Montreal collection, private donations, occasional or summer installations, 1% allocation during new construction or major renovations of government buildings, etc.
Several cities in Canada and the United States plan their public art with this more “macro” vision, this overall vision. They even go so far as to establish a vision with the surrounding communities or all the residents concerned.
I wish this for us
Montreal. I wish us a public art competition where proposals for works or installations would be voted on by thousands of citizens, like the magnificent Embellir Paris project. I would like us to come together to establish which sector is the most interesting for receiving public works of art on our territory and why. I even wish us a public consultation on the subject. I want to read people on this subject, all opinions. I want to feel that public art is indeed democratic, that it belongs to everyone. I really wish that for us.
