The Montpellier National Opera, in Hérault, has been offering escape games since 2018. This year, the public leads the investigation to solve the mystery surrounding the fictional composer Vincenzo Volta.
The Opéra Comédie was one of the first opera houses, along with the Paris Opera, to organize escape games. An original idea which has been a great success with each edition.

Actors to liven up the game
For several days, there has been excitement in the magnificent Italian theater of the Montpellier Opera. Every afternoon and evening, except Monday, the public is invited to discover Echoes of Volta. The escape game immerses young and old alike in a plot that revolves around an 18th century Italian composer called Vincenzo Volta, a character imagined for the show. The latter created a sublime musical work. But soon after, he descends into madness. A strange mask, which would have inspired him to compose his music, would be at the origin of his mental health problems.
By superstition, the evil object was sealed, with the score, for decades until this temporary exhibition dedicated to Vincenzo Volta. The mask must be presented to the public but, since the preparations, strange events have occurred. An adventure to which escape game participants actively contribute. For an hour, in small groups, they answer riddles. This year, there is a little new thing. Actors liven up the game. “We really have the impression of being immersed in the show. It comes to life. Generally in escape games, there is not that,” explains Andréa, a young spectator.
Diversify the audience
The public wanders backstage, crisscrossing every corner of the opera, up to the Salle Molière. A unique experience. “It’s good to visit an opera while playing”, enthuses a young teenager on vacation in Montpellier with her family. “I like that people discover opera in another way, not just in the hall, sitting comfortably. There are lots of places here that spectators don’t actually have access to.” adds its director, Valérie Chevalier.
Echoes of Volta, like previous escape games, are also an opportunity to attract a new audience, family or younger. The Opéra Comédie is also increasing its initiatives in favor of students, including a free classical concert each year. The next one will take place on November 11.
