In Mayenne, the Echologia park grows tomatoes using fish waste

If you are told aquaponics, you may think of ponies in water. You are way off! Florian, senior aquaponics technician at Echologia, cuts out the word: “Aqua for aquaculture, fish and pony production for hydroponics, above-ground plant production.

An example of aquaponic culture: in the lower tray, fish and in the upper tray, vegetables.

Concretely in the Echologia park in Louverné near Laval, there are first two green bins, one filled with fish and the other with green plants. “We understand that we have the two together in a closed circuitexplains Florian. It is therefore the same water that circulates, from the fish tank to the plant tank. There is a third compensator, it is the bacterial part, to treat fish droppings which will therefore come to fertilize the plants. It is the bacteria that will come to transform these excrements.“Result: in the upper plant tray, there are peppers and lettuces, grown using fish waste transformed by bacteria.

This cultivation technique is developing in France, where there are 15 aquaponic farms, including that of Echologia, which cultivates 700 kg of vegetables per year !
