About a hundred kilometers from the front line, Russia is rebuilding the city of Mariupol, destroyed two years ago, in the first months of the military operation launched by Vladimir Putin.

Now under the Russian flag, the city of Mariupol has become a huge construction site. Alongside the ruins, buildings are rising from the ground, others are being rehabilitated.
“The city is being rebuilt. We would always like it to go faster, but the pace is already high”notes a resident. “It’s hard that so many people died”whispers another passerby.

The city’s main source of employment

In the Lenin district, four out of twelve buildings still need to be renovated. Oleg Zaporojet, the site manager, explains that certain parts of the building structures must be completely reassembled. He is from St. Petersburg, but some workers come from Mariupol itself. “Before, I worked at the Illitch factory, we assembled metal constructions”explains a construction worker.

With the shutdown of the city’s two huge factories, these construction sites have also become the main source of employment in Mariupol. Two years after the start of the offensive, the city was repopulated. But to date it only has 250,000 inhabitants, according to the town hall. Against 500,000 before the war.
