The inhabitants fear that the big cities of the east and the south will suffer the same fate as Mariupol, 90% destroyed by the bombardments according to the mayor. AT Mariupolthe children learned to live in hiding and to the rhythm of the bombs.
The children of Mariupol (Ukraine) have their daily life punctuated by the sound of bombs. The parents try to reassure them as best they can. It’s been two days, Wednesday April 6, that Masha, 12 years old and her sister Valéria, 8, dares to venture into a courtyard. “Before, I was afraid of everything, of the slightest noise, but little by little, you get used to it. We can reassure ourselves by saying that either they shoot from here, or they shoot away”says the eldest. On March 18, they sought to leave Mariupol in the middle of a fight. They had to retreat after a few meters. “When we shot in front of the theater, something exploded”explains their mother.
With her family, Masha has been living underground for several weeks, almost without light, in the company of twelve other people. “I just want to go home and go to school, live like before”said Masha. The children also experienced the death of their grandmother, who had a heart attack in the cellar. His family buried him themselves a few meters from their refuge. “We couldn’t go any further, it was too dangerous”says the mother. She hopes that these children will not be traumatized and will quickly forget this nightmare.
