The holidays will begin on July 5 for millions of children, who will return to school on Monday, September 2. More and more municipalities are choosing to pedestrianize the streets around schools for greater safety, as is the case in Lille, in the North.
It is 8 am in a district of Lille (North): time to give the street back to schoolchildren. For 45 minutes, cars are absent. Only pedestrians and cyclists are allowed. “It’s great, we couldn’t have dreamed of anything better. Our children are free.”confides a woman. Here, pedestrianization is unanimous. Four schools line the street, so the risk of accidents was all the greater.
By closing access morning and evening, the mayor (PS), Olivier Caremelle, wanted to avert the danger. “There is concern because there could be a major traffic accident. We are doing everything to protect that.”he explains. The security system has been in place for two years, giving motorists time to gradually give up their old habits. “We find places to park, it’s really nice in fact”one of them rejoices.
