“We just ask to get out of our house“: since December 4, the elevator of a building located in Le Mans has been out of service. For almost 10 days, Charlie and Ronan Couasnard, aged 22 and 24, using a wheelchair, have been stuck. “We are sequestered at home“, Ronan told France Bleu Maine on Wednesday.
The couple of tenants with disabilities must manage to have food delivered “otherwise it’s my 75-year-old grandparents who will collect the groceries for us and help us“. To take down the trash, “we are dependent on the goodwill of our neighbors, on mutual aid“, explains the young man.
Charlie, the young woman, is increasingly worried about her health: “I am forced to cancel all my medical appointments even though I have serious respiratory problems.she says. All this is still discrimination, because we are physically disabled.”
The vandalized elevator
“The landlord doesn’t care“, laments Ronan: “The only answer we have at the moment is ‘we don’t know when it will be repaired’, ‘it’s coming soon, it won’t be long’.“The couple even alerted the town hall. For its part, the social landlord, Le Mans Métropole Habitat, ensures that the parts have been ordered. The recent building is located in the southern districts of Le Mans. The landlord explained that the elevator was vandalized, the connectors were torn off, the SIM card, which is used for emergency calls in the event of a breakdown, was stolen and the connection boxes destroyed.
A porterage service has also been set up for “provide assistance to tenants in carrying their groceries, take pets out, help them go down and up the stairs“, explains the management which explained to France Bleu Maine regret “this situation which puts tenants in difficulty“.
