After a week of discord on the left, Yannick Jadot responded in the field of ideas. The EELV presidential candidate held a first sober and small-caliber meeting on Saturday in the Aisne, where he wished “bring together” on “the happy alternative of ecology”. In the midst of a campaign that is struggling to take off, the candidate tried to silence calls for union from the left, calling “the humanists and progressives to join the ecological house”.
The candidate, stuck between 6 and 8% of the voting intentions, had warned that he was not targeting the show of force, after the meetings of Eric Zemmour and Jean-Luc Mélenchon last weekend. And indeed, only a few hundred activists, including the finalist of the September primary Sandrine Rousseau and the head of spokespersons Delphine Batho, gathered in a gymnasium in Laon, a few kilometers from the birthplace of Yannick Jadot.
The “Forum of Possibilities” began with a long musical sequence, then with testimonies at the microphone of a teacher, a home help and a farmer. Then Yannick Jadot climbed onto the platform to tell about his land in Picardy and his vocation as an ecologist: “It is there that my parents transmitted to me the love of trees and birds, the pleasure of seeing a doe pass by.”
The candidate devoted a large part of his speech to erecting ecology as a single “happy alternative”, which does “prevail over life and youth” against “identity panics”. He has thus drawn up his project as the only possible roadblock against the far right and the right, given for the moment by the polls only to be able to compete with Emmanuel Macron.
He promised to propose “in the coming weeks to the country’s living, social and political forces to share our project and our campaign”. For him, only the climate challenge can unite: “The planet is burning with mega-fires, sinking with floods, this climate change is undoubtedly the greatest challenge of our century, a universal challenge because we are touching our human, terrestrial destiny. “
